Question
It takes Tara many years before she finally relinquishes her guilt to Bim amd apologizes for her behaviour. It also takes Bim a great deal of time to forgive Raja for his letter and accept him. Was the time laspe necessary? How would the story and and the characters lives been different if they had been able to forgive and forget sooner? Do you think this would have been possible?

Very good question
ReplyDeleteTHIS QUESTION WILL TAKE SOME RESEARCH...I CONSULT WITH MY GROUP MEMBERS AND HAVE AN ANSWER PLACED BY THIS EVENING!!
ReplyDeleteThe time span that lasted between Tara and her Sister Bim(Bimla) and that between Bim and Raja was not necessary. This may be so as Tara thought that she could never forgive herself for allowing Bim to be stung by bees. She thought that Bim held it against her. However, Bim really did not. As a matter of fact she did not even remember until Tara brought it up. Bim readily forgives her.
ReplyDeleteAfter Hyder Ali died, Raja wrote a letter to Bim as her new landlord to tell her that she could pay the same rent. Raja had probably thought he was doing Bim a favour. Bim saw it differently. She keeps the letter only to remind herself why she has no intention of speaking to her brother.
Apart from Baba, the story itself and the lives of the other characters could have been different.
Bim, because of not wanting to see Raja, knows nothing of his family and only makes negative assumptions as to the life her brother and his family lead. She asserts that Raja is still unhappy. Had this resentment not existed she would have formed more positive opinions of her brother’s life style.
Also, it is evident that though Tara has much respect for her sister, she is still somewhat intimidated by her. It is certainly reasonable to conclude that had there been this healthier relationship between the two Tara would have gone to her sister sooner and expressed her feelings about the bee attack.
The story in itself may have been different because in some ways the roses, which border the infamous ‘rose walk,’ although present, are fragile and wither to the touch. It has deteriorated with the passage of time. This may be symbolic of the relationship among the siblings. The well too may not have been so prominent a part of the book. It stood as the symbol of dark, unplesant memories which began in childhood and remained even into adulthood just as events and situations which shape the plot of this well crafted literary work.
I believe that the time lapse was necessary as it takes time for a person to forgive, especially if they feel that all their life they have been abandoned.Bim is a soewhat misunderstood individual in that she holds things inside of her, the true her, how she feels and portrays this figure of a strong woman when at the end of the novel we can see that she starts to breakdown. The letter from Raja deeply hurt her and this is the reason for her demise.
ReplyDeleteThe story would've taken a different twist if they had chosen to forgive and forget sooner. Bim probably would not have remained the same, but rather she would have blossomed into a new person, one who was free from all care. Tara continuosly holds the guilt in her heart and if the situation was rectified from the start maybe she would not have married Bakul to escape as she would have been happy at home.
In every story there is always a climax and ant-climax. There is always conflict and resolution. Therefore, the time lapse was indeed necessary. It gave the characters time to really thing about their downfalls and come to a point where they admit their faults, forgive each other and move on. In life, we don't always admit we are wrong, well, at least not right away. It in until we are in our quite moments that, we reflect and realize that, hey I really did make a wrong decision and could have handled the situation in a different manner. This is exactly what occurred between Tara, Bim and Raja. They needed time in order to think about their actions and how it affected the other person and then to ask for forgiveness.
ReplyDeleteIf the characters were able to forgive and forget sooner, I think that their lives would have been a lot less conflicting and there would have been no need for the consistent bickering. It is possible that they could have settled their differences earlier. Anything is possible and if they wanted to, they could have made it happen.
I belive that the time lapse was not necessary, Bim should have forgive Raja for the letter and I do not believe that Tara should have carried that guilt for so long, this was probably one of the reasons why she took so long to return home. The characters lives would have been different had they learn to forgive and forget earlier. They would have had a closer relationship.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the time lapse was necessary. in life people are quite different from each other, while others will take a little less time to heal and look pass their differences, others need longer time to heal. but eventhough, i think their lives would have been a little different if they(especially Bim) had put their differences in the past, let go of the guilt(Tara)and reunite with each other as one family. in doing so, they would have gotten along better and even if future disputes occured they would have a much easier time solving them since the closeness between each other would be there.
