I think that the Urdu poems was to show us the link between Raja and Hyder Ali and how he was quite intrigued with the Religion itself. I believe these close encounters and family ties that he and Hyder Ali family had foreshadows the reunion that will occur.
I strongly agree with the comment made by Mrs. Buffonge. Raja's poems not only show the link between him and Hyder Ali but also the link between Hindus and Muslims. Despite the rivalry between these two social classes, there is still a sense of unity being demonstrated between Raja and Hyder Ali, who are Hindu and Muslim respectively. Raja's love for poetry, makes him look pass the differences of his so called Muslim "nemesis". Despite what he has heard about the Hindu-Muslim conflict, he is still eager to spend time with Hyder Ali and learn more about poetry. I think that this can even act as a moral to the story: despite our differences, there is still something that we can agree upon, something that has the ability to bring us together and help us to settle our differences.
I thnink that they do have a significance. Even though they are hard to understand it shows that these poems link him to Hyder Ali and it shows that he has an open-mind and is not biased to the conflict around him. He could've chosen to ignore the Muslims like everyone else and to hate them but instead he chose to learn about their culture and the different aspects of their culture. It also shows that he is a deep person in that he is able to take the poetry and turn it into something beautiful, one of the similarities between him and Hyder Ali
I believe Raja's poems had some significance because the poems shows the close relationship that Raja had with Hyder Ali Sahib and it helps to show the readers the close connection with Hindus and Muslims.
well... I don't really think that Raja'a poems are extremely significant to the book. however, to some extent his poems does reflect a sense a unity between the two social groups that were at war with each other based on their differences, but in my opinion this was only because his neighbour, Hyder Ali was grateful enough to let Raja use his library whenever he pleases to borrow books. so Raja inturn gained a closeness to Hyder Ali since he was kind to him.
Significance is a really strong word, as far as having an impact on how the story runs I think not. As for him and Hyder Ali Sahib developing a relationship because of this, in a sense yes and in a sense no. Hyder Ali was took a keen interest in the boy because he spoke sense and nothing he ever had to say was out of context. And no because Adults with power such as Hyder Ali did, don't normally become close to children such as that, especially since it was not his child and more so he was of a different religion, without wanting something in return or plotting something. In this case he had already viewed Raja as a potential husband for his daughter and encouraged his visits and another thing he realized that because Raja was so open, he could've easily manipulated his mind(eg.converting him to their religion) Which had already happened for Raja but only mentally and in some cases emotionally...The poems are just a part of the story!!
I really do think that his poems had a significance. In the novel Raja was so interested in Hyder Ali's religion that he would in a way hide his true religion and go study another (muslim). Well i have to agree with Phylicia because of Raja's open mindedness Hyder Ali was easy to persuade him to learn about their religion and studies, which he already kind of adapted to. Also it was significant because of the difference in religion at the time and the rivalry that was taking place in Dehli, because of the different religion and beliefs. Hence, the poems are of some significance, i would believe.
Yes I think that Raja's poems had a significance in the story. For Raja and Bim the poems prove to be a world outside of their own home. They used books and literature to look "beyond their house to the outside world".Some research was done and it was found out that Raja's poems were written in Urdu- the language spoken by Muslims,it should be noted also that Hindi and Urdu are actually slightly different dialects of the same language. The Urdu poems were written by Raja's favourite poet Iqbal. The poems were deep and probably too profound for Raja to understand but the fact that he shows interest in these poems shows that he wanted to be closer to Hyder Ali who was a Muslim.Raja's obsession with Hyder Ali and his way of life impacted Raja's choice of poem, besides that I think that the political situation of the country also impacted his choice of poem in terms of language.Hindi as a language was looked down upon while Ardu was considered "the language of the learned and the cultivated" which in Raja's opinion Hyder Ali was and what he later achieved after marrying into the Hyder Ali family. So the poems had the signifcvance of partially revealing to the readers Raja's own way of escape from their everyday lives.Kendra.
I believe that the poems were in fact of a great significance. Early in the novel it seemed as though Raja was always fascinated with Hyder-Ali Sahib. Hyder-Ali was Muslim amd Raja was Hindu, though that did not stop Raja from trying to get close with Hyder Ali. Again as mentioned earlier I do believe that these poems were somehow meant to show readers that their would be some link between Raja and Hyder-Ali later on in the novel. It is important to remenber how Raja seemed to be quite enthralled by Hyder- Ali as a young boy growing up, could even be said that he saw Hyder-Ali as a male role model, for remember Raja lacked that positive male figure within his home especially since his father was hardly ever present. So he was looking for someone to emulate, Hyder Ali was his neighbour so he seeked to emulate him, he wanted to have a bond with him. Hyder-Ali was a Muslim, and this infuenced him in liking the Urdu poems, for Urdu was a language which was spoken by Muslim people. Since Raja had liked Hyder-Ali so much to me his poems are significant, for they show the high regard which Raja held for Hyder-Ali, which then later shows the link which they later have in the novel.
i believe that the poems are important, they show the link between hyder- Ali and Raja but also shows Raja;s growth. As he matures so does his poems as well.
